California is a well known state for producing high quality wine, but there are other portions of the United States that also have a rich tradition of wine making. In Lancaster County Pennsylvania, there are the Nissley that are offered to visit the Nissley Vineyards and Estates.
For some wine enthusiasts, the thought of the Pennsylvania countryside being home to a vineyard may seem strange, but this successful winery has been in operation for more than twenty years producing quality flavor full wines. The surrounding area contains very fertile soil that is limestone based great for growing grapes.
What A Nissley Consists Of
Nissley are offered at the Nissley Vineyards & Winery Estates that is in Bainbridge Pennsylvania. The winery is situated near an 18th century mill and creek offering a picturesque setting. There are over fifty acres of tended grapes and there are fourteen varieties of grapes grown to make the well known wines.
Nissley can be done as a self guided tour or with a tour guide. Either way, a sample of the wine can be tasted at the end of the tour. A self guided tour can be done with eight or fewer guests.
A booklet is given to the group to be followed during the tour. There is no cost for this tour and it can be done year round during business hours.
A guided tour costs a nominal fee and can only be done on Friday mornings. Reservations are required so it is important to call ahead and make sure there is availability. During the tour questions can be answered for a better understanding of the wine making process.
Nissley can educate the wine lover about how the entire process of wine making occurs, from the growing of the grapes to picking the grapes to making the various wines. The process is fascinating and leaves a person with a greater appreciation of how wine is developed.
Another fun activity offered at the Nissley Winery is summer concerts on their lawns. The shows begin in late June and run through Labor Day Weekend. The bands are regional and vary from light rock to swing to oldies. The scenery is beautiful and the evening can be very romantic by getting a bottle of chilled wine from the Nissley winery and then enjoying an evening with music.
